Of the 18 awards being given out this year, EXO and SHINee are competing against each other in four major categories, including Best Male Group, Best Dance Performance – Male Group, Artist of the Year and BC – UnionPay Song of the Year.
SHINee owned the music scene this year with comeback track Dream Girl and continued its streak with Why So Serious? and Everybody.
But, it was EXO that arguably stole the show this year, finally finding its footing in the K-Pop world with hitsWolf and Growl after falling short of expectations in Korea with debut single Mama in 2012.
SHINee may have four years on its label mates, but one need only look at the current rankings on the MAMA voting page to see that EXO is rising fast.
As of November 14, EXO and SHINee are each holding on to the top spot for Song of the Year and Best Dance Performance – Male Group, respectively. Although Shinhwa continues to lead for the Best Male Group and Artist of the Year, EXO has a strong lead against SHINee for second place in both categories, indicating perhaps that if the tide is to change before voting closes, it will most likely shift in EXO’s favor.
Both idol groups boast extremely loyal fan bases, and as online votes influence the results, many are curious to see which group will take home prizes at this year’s MAMA.
Online voting for MAMA closes on November 21.
